His later years weren’t without real controversy. A leaked recording in 2015 revealed racist remarks he’d made, which led WWE to cut ties with him for a period before eventually reinstating him. He was also at the center of a widely covered lawsuit against the website Gawker over a leaked sex tape, a case that ended with Hogan winning a jury verdict worth well over a hundred million dollars and effectively bankrupting the publication. Health problems had been building for a while before his death. According to the medical examiner’s report from Pinellas County, Hogan had a documented history of atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm, along with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a type of blood cancer. His official cause of death was listed as acute myocardial infarction, in plain terms a heart attack, with his manner of death ruled natural. He’d also undergone several surgeries for back and heart issues in the years leading up to his death.
WWE’s statement at the time called him “one of pop culture’s most recognizable figures,” crediting him directly with helping the company “achieve global recognition in the 1980s.” His family’s own statement, shared shortly after, put it more simply: “It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that we confirm we have lost a legend.”
A year later, footage of that Andre the Giant slam still circulates constantly online, still introduced to new audiences who weren’t alive to see it happen live.
